SD> shifter

I have a 89 daytona shelby  2.2/555.  My son is having trouble shifting into 1st and 2nd gears.  We push the clutch pedal in and the shifter feels like it goes in.  But when I let the clutch out   It starts to grind and it does not engage.  This happens in 1st and 2nd gears only.  All other gears are fine.  Could this be that the shifter cable need to be adusted?  Or is it the transmission?
