What part couldn't you get off?  The snap ring?  There is a tool for compressing the locking mechanism to get the snap ring off, Sears carries it.  Or you can make one, I made one out of a spare tire hold down, I just shortened it and opened the hole up some, then put it over the large bolt and compressed with the steering wheel nut.  It really isn't bad once you get that off.
