I had this problem just last year.  It made a
horrendous racket when I'd push the clutch pedal down,
and when I released the clutch, it was quiet.  But
once the engine was warmed up, it would never make any
noise.  It just goes to show how much .002" of
crankshaft endplay can make a difference and how
things change and metal heats up.

I had the upper and lower tins overlapped the wrong
way.  Just a quick R&R of the lower shield fixed it
